Choosing the right method of hair extensions for you

Choosing the right hair extensions can be overwhelming as there are lots of methods available and lots of information floating about (not all of it true!).

I would always recommend a thorough, in person consultation with a qualified professional to go through options based on your person desired outcome, and also based on your natural hair starting point. Each person will be different due to lots of variables, and so it is a very bespoke service and fitting.

Here is a hair extension guide to give you an idea of the best hair extensions for different hair types:

Nano ring hair extensions

Nano rings are brilliant for being discreet. They are tiny metal beads with silicone centres to avoid harsh metal going into the hair. The tiny metal beads are threaded onto a small section of natural hair, and a 0.8-1g strand of extension is popped into the bead along with the natural hair and clamped down.

This option provides full 360 movement and is a great option for fine hair, especially at the front sides and close to the top of the head. This is also a great option for those looking for some volume.

Refits are generally every 8-10 weeks, although those with particularly fine hair prefer to go 6-8 weeks.

Tape hair extensions

Tape hair extensions are great for adding thickness right through to the ends (which individuals sometimes struggle to unless you have a lot in) and with their 4cm wide tabs, are good for breaking up any thick or blunt cuts to help create a seamless blend.

For me personally, I don’t agree that tapes are great for people with fine hair and prefer to use them on those with medium hair, or a combo of nano rings on the sides where people have fine hair and tapes on the back if they are typically thicker in the back. Refits on tapes are every 6-8 weeks and involve a little bit more work than nanos - including a hair wash or 3 to remove tape residue!!… the final outcome is worth it though as you’ll have ‘wow’ worthy hair.

LA Weave hair extensions

LA Weave is a fab way to get ultimate thickness and length, when girls that have medium to thick hair come to me and say they want 18-24 inch hair and lots of it, this is my go to.

LA Weave is a super safe way to get lots of hair in, in shorter amounts of time. The weft of hair is sewn into a beaded track and is then refitted every 8-10 weeks. The weft shouldn’t really be put past the ear due to our hair typically being finer in the front sides so it wouldn’t be as discreet but also because less safe and too heavy for the natural hair. Due to this reason, I will often do a nano/ tape hybrid option to fill out the sides, if needed.

LA Weave isn’t suitable for everyone and due to the weight and the amount of natural hair you need to support the weft, I wouldn’t offer this option for someone with fine hair. It also wouldn’t be as discreet as nano rings.
